Samuel Heinrich's Usability Testing Website

Moderator Script

Pages sent to users for tests:

Greet subject, thank for participation

"Hello!
How has your day been?
By the way, thank you for being here.
I know your time is valuable, so I appreciate you helping me with this test."

Make sure zoom call is working correctly (check audio and video)

"I just want to verify, are you able to see my video, and can you hear my audio well?"

Let subject know that you are reading from a script

"First things first, I want to make sure you know that I am reading from a script.
This is because I want to be sure that I say the same things for each of the participants and I don't miss anything."

Tell subject they can leave at any time

"So, at any point during this test, from now until the end of this Zoom call, if you are feeling uncomfortable, or if you need to break away for any reason, feel free to leave whenever you need to."

Review controls in Zoom for screen sharing

"So now I want to go over the controls for screen sharing on Zoom.
So to share your screen, click the button that says 'Share Screen' at the bottom of the Zoom window."

Remind subject that screen and our audio and video will be recorded

"You might have already guessed this, but I want to make sure you know that this test will be recorded.
That means that your screen, as well as both of our cameras and audio, will be recorded.
Again, if any of that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to leave the test at any time.
Do I have your consent to record this test?"

Ask if subject has any questions/concerns

"Now, do you have any questions or concerns about what I've said so far?"

Have subject open email with test information

"Now I want you to open up your personal email.
There should be an email I sent you that contains some information you will need for the test.
Go ahead and open it up."

Have subject click link in email for pre-test questionnaire

"There should be three links listed in the email.
The first link is for the pre-test questionnaire, and it is labeled as such.
The second and third links are for the information you will be using during the usability test and the website you will be testing, and we will get to that later.
Now, go ahead and click on the first link, the one for the pre-test questionnaire."

Have subject read pre-test questionnaire, answering each question

"So for this questionnaire, I want you to read each question out loud, and then give the answer that you think is the most accurate for yourself, based on the answers provided.
A few of the questions don't provide answer options, so for those, just give your best answer.
(Once subject is done answering questions) We are done with the questionnaire now, so you can close this tab if you want."

Explain the purpose of test, testing product, not you

"So I want to emphasize the purpose of this test.
I'm NOT here to test your ability to complete these tasks in a quick and efficient manner.
The reason I'm doing this test is so I can see how you go about doing certain tasks in the way that feels most natural to you.
I'm trying to get a good idea of how other users of this website might do these things, because everyone is different, and something that might seem simple for one user could be confusing for another."

Describe think-out-loud process and ask subject to do so during test

"I also want to know how you feel and what you are thinking throughout the test.
For me to know this, I ask that you do your best to think out loud while you are completing the tasks.
If you like the way something looks or works, then say that.
If you get confused or frustrated with something, then say that and explain your frustrations.
There are no wrong answers in this test - I want your most genuine impressions."

Ask subject to click link in email for persona information

"Now, I want you to go back to the email I sent you, and click on the second link, the one for the persona and scenario information."

Explain the concept of the persona that subject will be given

"On this page, I outlined a persona that you will be acting as for the test.
This is necessary because you will be creating a new LinkedIn account, and I don't want you to have to use your personal information.
Also, there is a description of this persona's situation and goals, which you will use to complete the tasks in a way that you feel is working towards these goals."

Explain concept of scenarios and tasks

"Below the persona description, there are three tasks listed.
You will work on one task at a time, and when you are done with one, you will move on to the next one.
I will have you read each of these tasks out loud when you get to them, meaning you will read a task after you have completed the previous one."

Ask subject to let me know when they are done with the current task

"When you are working on a task, I want you to let me know when you feel that you have completed the task.
This is important, because it lets me know how well the website communicated your task completion to you."

Ask subject to read persona information out loud, then ask any questions they may have

"Now, would you read out loud the information of the persona?
You can start at the line that says 'Name:'."

Ask subject to log out of personal email (keeping persona link open) and log into persona email

"There is one more thing I need you to do before we begin the test.
First, make sure that the tab that shows the persona and scenario information is kept open.
Click on the third link in the email, the one for the website you will be testing.
If you are logged in to your personal LinkedIn account, log out now.
Now, go back to the email tab.
Now, please log out of your personal email account.
I want you to log into a gmail account using the email address and email password that is given on the persona information tab - you can copy and paste if you want.
You will be using this email for your new LinkedIn account, and since you will have to verify the email, I want you to have it open at this point."

Ask subject to read the first task and ask any questions

"Now, we are finally ready to begin the test.
Read the first task listed, and if you have any questions about what you are expected to do, then now is your chance to ask them."

Subject is completing tasks, repeat previous line in script as needed

After end of last scenario, ask subject what they liked or disliked about the UI/UX

"And that marks the end of your tasks for this test.
That was very informative!
Now, is there anything that you would like to say about what you liked or disliked about the LinkedIn website, including the look and feel?"

Ask subject what they liked/disliked about the testing environment

"Is there anything you have to say about what you liked or disliked about the testing environment?"

Ask subject if they have anything else they wanted to mention

"Is there anyting else that you want to say before I conclude this test, anything at all?"

Thank the subject for their time

"Thank you again for giving me your time for this test.
It did a lot to help me find issues that need fixing with this website.
I hope you have a good rest of your day!"
